Jack & Luke

Jack and Luke are lab mixes both adopted from the Atlanta Humane Society seven years apart. Jack is a (mini!) black lab mix who is now seven years old, and his little brother Luke, a chocolate lab mix, just joined the family two weeks ago and is only 16 weeks old! Usually in sessions like these, it’s the puppy who steals the show, but Jack was quite the camera ham and had such a myriad of expressions that every time I turned the camera to Luke, Jack would do something new that I had to capture.

Jack knows any real lab must be OBSESSED with tennis balls, so other than his mom and dad, this is truly his passion. Anytime there’s a tennis ball in the room it’s all he has eyes for, and if you try to hide it he’ll just sniff it out! He fetches, jumps, and even plays a quiet game of nudging it with his nose and rolling it across the floor or bed to you if there’s not enough room for fetching and jumping.

And as Jack: The Tennis Ball, Luke: His Big Brother (haha, bet you haven’t seen that since the SAT!) — little Luke is totally enamored of Jack and follows him everywhere. When I first walked in the door, Luke barely registered a visitor because he was too busy trying to get Jack to play with him. He’s always watching him, following his lead, and wanting to be near him. They are going to be great buddies…

Eli & Elvis

Eli and Elvis are very handsome six-month-old brothers who were found abandoned in a park when they were only nine weeks old. Luckily for them, they were found by Maddie and Abby‘s mom, so they now have a wonderful home where they’ll have everything they need and more. Sometimes I hear about how littermates taken into the same home can cause issues since they will bond to each other instead of the owner, but this is definitely not the case with these boys. They follow Lori around 24/7 and the main challenge of this session was getting them unglued from her!

But the hilarious thing – they follow her around together, and anytime she’s addressing them or giving them a treat, they squish together as close as they can and both look up at her with these big brown eyes. Who could have abandoned these faces?!

Eli is the on the left below, Elvis on the right (Eli is the redder one, Elvis has the widow’s peak):

It’s been awhile since the kiddos graced the blog…

We were snowed in for most of last week, which meant my sessions got postponed and I had no excuse but to get caught up on computer work and personal projects (i.e., photographing my own kids!). And after this, I kinda wish the snowed-in thing would happen more often! My fellow dog photographers out there know what I mean when I say we don’t get to photograph our own dogs enough – working on these really warmed my heart. Even though the dogs are lying at my feet right now, there is something about seeing these tender expressions and knowing I have finally captured them for myself, and I smiled the whole time I worked on these. (Don’t worry, as soon I hit “post” I will go snuggle with them for real!)

We have at least four other dog beds in the house, but I got it in my head that I needed another one for the main living room that would match the decor so I wouldn’t have to move it every time we had guests over. (Corey thought this was ridiculous as the dogs view the actual couch and loveseat as their own personal dog beds, but he didn’t really have a say.) Yes, they still sit mainly on the couch, but can I just say – of all the beds we have, this was the favorite the day it was delivered. It’s a West Paw bumper bed, and you get to choose the color of the outside bumper and the interior, which leaves endless combinations – and it’s eco-friendly! Ellie and Becks love having the bumper to prop their heads on, and Sienna loves burrowing in the corners to find the space with maximum potential warmth.

And the most significant indicator that this bed is freakin’ awesome? If I bring it into the bedroom, it is the ONLY way that we can get Sienna to opt to not sleep in the bed with us. (Sienna has a way of taking her 7 pounds and making it feel like you’re in bed with a 50-pound dog, the way she positions herself. All the dogs are allowed in the bed with us and we love it, but let’s face it…three dogs + two humans can get crowded and sometimes we just need some space!) That is a serious feat.

So, while all the roads were covered in ice, we had a camera party and each of the kids took turns modeling in their new bed. πŸ™‚

This look below on the right is the face Ellie gives you, paw out, corner of her mouth turned up in a smile, when you are close enough to pet her but you’re not. It SLAYS ME. It’s a wonder she’s not going bald from all the petting she elicits with this face.

admin - @myboyzach – they did get to play and loved the snow, but i’m afraid i wasn’t feeling well that week and didn’t want to exacerbate it by getting cold and soaking wet chasing them around in the yard. :p

@joni – i don’t think i have one specific post about my equipment, but i mention it here and there. i currently shoot with a nikon d700.

@anna – yes, all natural window light for these!

January 24, 2011 - 2:43 pm

Trude - Thanks for the tip on the bed, I think it might be just the right thing for Dante! He tends to roam when I’m working out of the home office and I’d love to find something he’s happy to lay in by himself. That last shot of them all together is just too cute!! πŸ™‚

January 20, 2011 - 10:45 pm

myboyzach - OH, so cute each seperately, together and in/on the bed. Glad to see all the kids. No snow pictures? Did they get to play?

January 20, 2011 - 12:47 pm

Joni Solis - What a wonderful family of fur! Love the new bed too — sky blue color looks lovely with all your dogs.

By the way, do you have a blog post that talks about your camera equipment?

January 20, 2011 - 12:20 pm

Anna Gibson - Wonderful shots, the color goes great with them too, but what dog wouldn’t look good next to sky blue? Did you use window/natural light for these? I miss that. All our windows are covered as we live in the basement of a house, at ground level. It will be nice to one day own a house that has nice natural light again. My vizsla loves beds with sides too, I have a Bowser donut bed I’m saving for when the others are worn out. You would love those too as there are all sorts of awesome fabrics to pick from, and everything is totally washable and replaceable.

Glad you had a chance to shoot your own kids
Take care
Anna
