Dekalb County Animal Services

You know the drill…if you know anyone looking to add a family member, please please PLEASE encourage them to adopt and let them know how many beautiful, loving dogs and cats are waiting desperately for homes. Here are just a few that I met this week; there are many more on DCAS’s facebook page, and a directory with more details on how to adopt on their main website.

If you are interested in a specific pup or kitten below, you can also contact the adoption coordinator directly at jsmartinez [at] dekalbcountyga [dot] gov – I’m sorry I didn’t have time to add ID numbers to each of the photos below.

This poor puppy was being attacked by two larger dogs when he was picked up as a stray. His injuries were so severe they didn’t think he would make it through the night, but when I met them the next day he was pleading to be petted and eagerly lapping up his food. (He will need rescue because of his medical needs and photo of the main wound is here.)

undefined

I could hear this kitten literally crying all the way down the hall – but as soon as he was out of his cage and in your arms, he quieted completely and just wanted to be loved on.

undefined

I was told that this is, unfortunately, just that time of year – with so many stray and feral cats not spayed or neutered, the shelter is literally overflowing with litters of kittens of all ages and sizes, many not even a pound yet. With this many sharing cages with their developing immune systems in this environment, they run the risk of illness and desperately need rescue.

I was there when this baby was surrendered. These animals may not know exactly what’s happening when they’re abandoned, but they feel it.

admin - @Laine – Thanks for your note! I hope you’re able to foster her!! Keep us posted…

Laine Sweezey - Leesia, the photo of the Rottweiler resting his/her head on a volunteer’s chest is so touching, and I have not been able to get it out of my mind for two months now. I am currently emailing the animal services center to see if that dog is still there and to try to become the dog’s foster. If I get ridiculously lucky, I will let you know!

Tim The Atlanta Picture Framer - Kittens are abominably cute en masse…I just know your photos are helping to save some of these babies. Thank you.

Julie - Thanks Leesia for the cute picture of the kitten your heard crying down the hallway. Because of that picture my husband and I adopted him on Saturday. He is a joy! And yes, he does have a very interesting voice.

Akila - Leesia, as always these pictures are exceptional but those kitten pictures just break my heart. They are so sweet and sad.

May 19, 2011 - 8:50 am

Lopa - I add my plea to Leesia – I have had 2 dogs in my lifetime and they are both rescues. My life would not be the same without them. They are amazing in what they have overcome, their love, affection, tolerance and all around great attitude toward life.ADOPT – it will enrich your life tremendously!

PS – MUTTS RULE!

Pat Thomas - Leesia, I just want to AGAIN thank you for what you are doing. Photos DO make a difference, and, I know some of these animals will be adopted because of your efforts.
With sincere gratitude, and friendship,
Pat

Roman

Roman is a handsome 4-year-old Bernese Mountain dog and cousin of Shuggie, Georgia and Charlie Brown. He has some really endearing quirks: when he’s outside, he’ll jump and bark and beg for his toys, but as soon as he has them he drops them on the ground and walks away! When he’s excited he likes to nibble (on a bed, a plush toy, an arm!), or he walks in figure-eights back and forth between your legs.

And when you ask him if he wants to go for a walk, he finds his leash and runs around with it in his mouth. Aren’t dogs the funniest?

Adrienne - You are such a talented photographer, to be able to capture animals is a true gift without blurs or their eyes not looking at you. I just love these pictures of Roman. Thanks for sharing.

Tucker

This year just seems to be the year of amazing black lab/black lab mixes! Tucker is a three-year-old rescue pup who is bursting with energy, personality, and love. He loves kissing and cuddling, and also runs circles so fast in the backyard my head was spinning halfway through the session! His dad does this hilarious thing where he counts down from three, and by the time he gets to two Tucker takes off to all the corners of yard; he’s done this since he was a puppy and it is the funniest thing.

When he’s not burning off energy, he’s in his room (yes, of course he has his own room!) stretched out on the futon and beckoning with his eyes to be petted. And if all that weren’t cute enough, his ears have three positions — “the lab ears,” “the ? ears” and “half lab half ?” ears (any guesses to what he’s mixed with?), shown in sequence below:

Whenever his mom tried to move away from him to sneak out of the frame, he would reach out like this. Sweet boy.

See what I mean about the bedroom eyes?

This is Tucker’s “lemon face”:
